May
22, 2010: Peach State CLC visits the Milt Robson Collection!
Given a magical invitation to indulge your fantasy,
which of Milton Robson’s amazing vehicles would you drive away today, and
not look back? (Apologies, Milt, but we are in a dreamscape bid for your
most desirable car.) Poncho lovers, would it be one of the tri-power
Bonnies? A GTO Judge convertible? That Pink Lady convertible that is so
near and dear to Milt’s heart? Or maybe you lean toward the Buicks: the
’53 Skylark (Martina) or the Roadmaster? Oh, there are lots of
fuel-injected Camaros and 409 Impalas to choose from. Now, that boat tail
Hudson
is probably taken (Kipping?). There were several Chryslers for y’all to
pick from. You might even
choose the one-of-a-kind blown ’53 Eldorado. Drive all the others away if
you must, but leave me the ’57 Eldorado Brougham… or in a pinch that
Biarritz
!
The Peach State CLC joined the Jaguar, Thunderbird
and Studebaker Clubs for a morning in the presence of Milton Robson’s
precious automobiles from General Motors, Ford and Chrysler. We met at the
Cracker Barrel Old Country Store near Braselton for breakfast. At 9:30
PSCLC president Stan Tucker led us in motorcade to Mr. Robson’s compound
– after a brief de-“tour” to show off the vehicles. Who
could count, but I’m guessing 200 people were there – our first time in
two years. I can remember 25 people in attendance from the PSCLC (but would
welcome being reminded of others I simply failed to jot down):
Stan Tucker, Dick Peden, Chuck Heastings, Robert Kipping, Frank and
Martina Butler (with guests), Frank C. Butler (with guest), Doug Bailey
(with guest Charlie McBride), Paul and Gloria West, Henry and Elizabeth
Mainwaring, Alan Grist, Bruce Scheck, Hal and Cathy Raper, Greg Marshall,
Jimmy and Mary Sue Dorsey (with guest), Jay Friedman. I think we had 12 or
fifteen cars there.
Milt’s collection is nothing short of stunning.
Breath-taking. One can never get enough of this eye candy, no matter how
many times we are invited. Milt’s garage is the stuff of illusion: the
Texaco station and soda fountain take you back in time. The neon assaults
your senses. And the CARS! The cars…
If you could not make it to this event, just take a look at the
accompanying photos. If you were there you know they do the
real thing an injustice, because no one can capture the brilliance of
Milt’s place with digital media. Let’s
hope there will be another invitation in the future! --Doug Bailey

May
29, 2010: 9:00 AM: Peach State CLC visits;
“The Allure of the
Automobile” at The
High
Museum
on
Peachtree Street
in
Atlanta
.
Back in February, when the
High
Museum
announced its intention to exhibit eighteen “rolling works of art,” we
began in earnest planning this event. Many times since I have thought we
might lose track of this one, because we had SO much going on as a club in
March, April and May. But your Peach State Cadillac & LaSalle Club
showed up in High Class Saturday. If you love the automobile, and you have
not been there yet, you must GO!
You can check for yourself at the
High’s site: http://www.high.org/main.taf?p=3,2,1,14,2
The exhibition, which runs through June 27th, traces the evolution of the
motorcar, examining the contrasts between European and American designs,
and the changes in automotive styling on either side of World War II.
What an exhibit! I’m already on record as coveting the ’57
Eldorado Brougham, so you all can fight over the Duesenberg, the Delage,
the Packard, the Bugatti, McQueen’s Jag and both the Mercedes (540K and
300SLR). Call me a Cadillac Man, through and through…
Twenty Peach State CLC members and
nine guests participated. (We missed six others whom we had been expecting:
the Ruffalos, the Gonzalezes, and the Grists – all had something
come up.) In attendance were the Dorseys, the Butlers, the Lindauers, the
Rapers, the Wests, and Frank Butler, Robert Kipping, Sandy Partridge (with
guest Craig Shuey), Doug Bailey (with guests Chuck and Charlie McBride and
Steve Coleman), Josie Starnes and her daughter Debi, Lewis Schwartz and his
uncle, Colonel Joel Hawkins (USAF ret.), Joe Ochs, Dan Kasal (and kids),
and Forrest Ward.
We lined ‘em up at 9:00 AM at the
IKEA lot at Atlantic Station, and were welcomed by the store’s security
folks, who eventually invited us to come back some day as a group. (Can you
say “Field TRIP!”) We caravanned to the High, where we were met
by the High’s staff. They provided secure parking for our lineup of
Cadillacs, Porsches, and Corvettes on the
Calloway
Plaza
, next to the High. The High presented us each with a certificate
indicating we had participated in the “Allure…” That was a nice
touch. In fact, the High accommodated our every request. A very pleasant
experience, and we want to go back!
We entered the museum as a group at
10:00 AM for the tour. Once inside, we wandered on our own, taking the time
we needed to study these works of art. We have a few shots that included
our members. None were hanging over the barriers, though… Most of us
spent a little time in the gift shop flipping through photos and posters.
The exhibit’s art book, entitled “The Allure…” is a keeper. You may
order one on the High’s web site (members: $36.00).
We came out about noon to find
several folks strolling among our cars, possibly taking advantage of being
able to get “up close and personal” with some LOCAL rolling artwork.
When a few peered inside for a closer look, we didn’t call them out for
getting too close or for using flash photography, as had the security
personnel inside. PSCLC – the friendly club
By noon some of us were hustling on
home for weekend chores or holiday events. Others regrouped at some of the
Midtown lunch spots after the exhibit – Vickery’s, Front Page News, and
South City Grill. I’ve heard back from many of you who participated, and
everyone so far has said they had a wonderful time. Me too, me too!

My buddy Charlie McBride took a bunch of photos during
the exhibit, and since he was Johnny on the Spot with the link, I figured I
might as well share that with you. If there is a bit too much of the Turk
early in the sequence please forgive Charlie. He was just trying to make
sure he had a ride home...

April 4,
2010: The
Annual Avondale Estates Easter Day Parade.
Every year a different Club
hosts this event, this year it was our Clubs turn!
"The Peach State CLC was
well represented as hosts at the annual Avondale Estates Easter Parade on
Sunday, April 4th. First in line at 1:30 on
South Avondale Road
was Stan Tucker, organizer of this year’s event. Stan handed out nice,
souvenir dashboard magnets to the participants. Escorted by several of
Avondale Estate’s finest, a lineup of over 40 classics made its way for
nearly half an hour through and about the city’s colorful neighborhoods.
There were several Cadillacs besides Stan’s ’56 Fleetwood (“the
Godfather”), including Steve and Brenda Rinaldo’s ’37 Sixty Special,
Mark Allbaugh’s ’41 convertible coupe, Bill Greene’s ’76 Eldorado,
Mike and Dianne Dougherty’s ’56 sedan, Josie Starnes’ and daughter
Debbie’s ’78 coupe de ville (“Tweety Bird”), Frank and Martina’s
’64 Eldorado (“Big Blue”), and Doug’s ’58 sedan (the “Turk”).
Mark also brought a couple of vintage Rolls Royces. There were a
large number of Fords of various ages and configurations, from Jay
Friedman’s Model A sedan to a ’37 coupe, a ’51 convertible, several
pickups and a ’58 Mercury… There was at least one Easter Bunny in the
parade, an orange ’74 VW bug with big ears and a pink twitchy nose driven by
Peach State Members Henry Sluss and Barbara Malone. Henry called this their
“VW Rabbit.”
The city turned out in droves,
lining the parade route. Many of the kids received candy thrown from the
windows of the cars. (The adults had to settle for honks from the classic
cars…) The parade, as usual, ended in the city park. Stan and the club
served chips and soft drinks to the crowd. As part of their leisurely Sunday
afternoon at the park, the families with small children could admire the cars
between their turns at the swing sets and the teeter totters. Along the route
we heard many of Avondale’s people shout out “Happy Easter!” and
“Thanks for bringing your cars!” It seems they want us to “come again”
next year! -- Doug
March

March
6th, 2010:The 2010 4th Annual Dave Comstock Chili Cook-off.
We met at member Dick
Peden’s beautiful homestead in Alpharetta at Noon on Saturday, March
6th. The weather was sunny, warm and clear. For the first time in recent
memory we had a beautiful day. To honor our event, Dick and his wife
arranged for a new filly to be born just a few hours before we arrived.
Dick opened the hoods on all his beautiful cars, and was kind enough
to share some of the details and stories behind these high end cars. We
heard about Dick’s re-working of the older Buick (after taking out a few
hundred feet of guardrail). He told us how he found the GTO, the rarity of
the fuel-injected ’57 Bonneville, the acquisition of the two
close-to-the-heart Vettes. Lots of participants settled on one of
three other convertible heart-stoppers as their
“wish-I-could-take-one-home” dreamscapes: The ’57 Chrysler New
Yorker, the ’53 Packard
Caribbean
, and (be still my heart) – the Arctic White ’53 Eldorado
Convertible… Guess which was your author’s dream-car? Yup. True to
Motordom’s Masterpiece…
There were many terrific
chili recipes and corn bread, cakes and pies to sample. In a huge upset
(not really), Mike and Dianne Dougherty took home the first prize for
their chili – for the second year in a row – making them the new Chili
Kings of the Peach State CLC! Stan, the estimable Prez, took second place,
and Marty’s good friend Doug took third place. Too good to be forgotten!
Here is the roster of
attendees, besides our host, Dick Peden:
1. Marty Comstock and
friend Doug
3. Marty's son-in-law and daughter, & later, another daughter, her
husband & children
9. Greg Marshall and guest Jim Collier
11. Robert Kipping
12. Martina Butler
13. Stan Tucker
14. Paul and Gloria West
16. brand new member, Dan Kasal and friend, Misty
18. Henry Dabrowsky
19. Henry Sluss and Barbara
21. Forrest Ward
22. Mike Dougherty 23. Doug Bailey
I cannot wait for our FIFTH
annual Dave Comstock Chili Cook-off. Thanks again to our generous and
informative host, Dick!
