Events For The Month Of  February 2012

February

The 6th Annual, World Famous, Dave Comstock Chili Cook-Off - Sunday Feb. 19th @1PM

Come out and bring your best chili to see if you can win the coveted Best Chili Award. If you don't make chili that's ok, just bring your favorite side dish or dessert. Marty Comstock will select the judges from those who “have no (chili) dog in the hunt.” Prizes will be awarded! Bring your chili! Spicy beef or white chicken. Or maybe you should surprise us!

President Stan Tucker and our host Dick Peden will remind us of the club’s 2012 activities schedule. We may get an update from Lee Dunn on the year-old Passport program, designed to encourage Peach State members to drive their cars on club tours and other events. Martina will remind us that the spring driving tour is April 20-22 to the mountains of east Tennessee. The BOPC show is the first weekend of May in Marietta. And those are just the tips of the iceberg!

If you have never seen Dick’s “garage,” you had better not miss this year’s Chili Cook-off! It’s a ‘Fifties and ‘Sixties sock-hop with some of your best friends.

The festivities will kick off at 1 PM on Sunday. The Club will provide awards as well as the paper, plastic, and drinks.

Directions:  GA 400 to Exit 10 (Old Milton Pkwy) exit off GA 400 towards Alpharetta going (East away from Roswell toward Duluth) for roughly 2.5 or so miles, bear to the right (you are actually staying straight ahead) onto State Bridge Rd for about 1 mile and then turn right (at the QT Gas Station) onto Jones Bridge Rd for about another mile, then turn left on to Buice Rd and look for Candacraig Road about a ¼ mile on your left. There is a brick unmanned Guard House at the entrance to Candacraig Road – that is Dick’s Subdivision. Dick’s house is on the right, 4645 Candacraig Road, Alpharetta, 30022. A Yellow/White house on the right, pull up close enough to the gate and it will open.
DO NOT stop in the middle of the gate or it will bite you!

Help? If you need more info or get turned around call:
Stan Tucker; 404-513-7387 or Dick Peden; 404-202-3134

1996 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham
"Steel Magnolia"?

Well, my brother and I brought her home after an 11 hour drive from Boca Raton. It was an adventure. You know, I know better, but I filled it up and got on the freeway without first buying a can of “dry gas.” I KNEW she had sat for some time, maybe a couple of years, without any major driving. So, what do you think? Right – ethanol breaks down and leaves water in the system… I got 250 miles away from Boca and bam! She dies right on the freeway… Long story short, I have two good buds in the Peach State club and both were tremendous helps. Stan Tucker, who owns a brother Fleetwood (built just three months before mine in Arlington TX), was a huge sounding board all through this purchase. And Bob Winchell diagnosed my problem right off. After my last episode I hobbled into a gas station and bought some gas conditioner. Made it the rest of the way through holiday traffic and a hell of a rain storm, six more hours, without an incident. Today she was running like a top.

I am still searching for a name. Since I have the Turk (short for “turk-oise”) and the Tux (short for “Tuxedo”), this one might oughtta have a T-name too… And “Ticonderoga,” while apt as a tribute to the big gray WWII aircraft carrier, is too long for a vanity tag…

But let me tell you about her…

She’s showing 48,035 miles. I just put the last 700 or so on in one day… She is a one-owner car. Best I can tell she belonged to an elderly lady in Ft Worth, who could no longer drive. Her husband dealt it to me with power of attorney through a broker in Boca Raton. I won an eBay bid last Thursday – and that’s a story for another day. Let’s leave it that I got a good deal… Mocha silver with matching interior. Brougham – the only options were chrome wheels and a CD player, and we have neither. But as you might expect the Fleetwood Brougham came with power everything!   This is the last year for the big Cadillacs with V8s and rear wheel drive on a frame. End of an era. Arlington, where GM built the Roadmasters and Impalas alongside the Broughams, started making truck/SUVs in ’97. She has the Corvette LT-1 V8, a fuel injected 350 (5.7 liter) producing 260 horsepower. In ’97 they started downsizing the engines (to 4.6 liters I think). The car is a beast – as long as my ’66 and ’58 Cadillacs, and nearly as heavy: 4,400 pounds. Front disc brakes, rear drums. ABS, traction control, Twilight Sentinel lighting, heated power seats, and LOTS of leg, head and shoulder room!

 Proud Papa Doug Bailey

Doug Bailey has finished our Club's new membership data base. This has been quite a job and we thank him for all his work. Now the job falls to us, please, if you change your email, phone, address or add / delete a car let Doug know. This will ensure we have a complete and up to date membership data base that benefits all of us. Please save the following new email address in your address book so it will not go to your spam folder. Doug can be reached at the following email address; Peach_State_CLC_members@yahoo.com

Join your Local Peach State Chapter of the CLC!

Annual dues are $25.00 – or you may pay a discounted rate of $65.00 for three years. Please make your check payable to Peach State CLC.

Our newsletter, the TAILFIN, is usually about 12-pages, a full-color 8.5 x 11 Adobe document full of photos and news about recent and upcoming club events. We normally distribute the TAILFIN six times a year as an attachment to an email. If you cannot accept a 2.5 to 3.0 MB pdf file via email, you may elect to have the TAILFIN delivered to your door in hard copy format by adding $5.00 to your membership dues. The money goes to offset the cost of black and white printing and postage.  Currently, we have 16 members who prefer the U. S. Mail delivery option. If you can handle downloading the TAILFIN from an email, we encourage you to do so – as it takes a lot of time to prepare those 18 mail-out TAILFINS. Thanks!

To print the membership application / renewal form, please click the link: http://www.peachstateclc.com/application3.pdf and send it back with your check. If you cannot print the form, please let us know and Doug will mail you one.

Thank you!
