December 12, 2009:
Club Christmas Party.
The
Peach
State
Cadillac & LaSalle Club held its 17th annual Christmas
Holiday
Banquet Saturday, December 12th.
Saturday
dawned with damp winds and gray skies, reminding us that winter is here –
in spite of Stan’s promise to deliver sunshine and blue skies. Rain was
threatening, and you know that had to be a chiller on the number of classic
Cadillacs turning out. And yet, by noon there they were, scattered about
like fruit on a tray. (Actually on the ramp across from our banquet
quarters.) At least a dozen Cadillacs showed up, of many years and colors!
Welcome back to Creations, the fine restaurant located at the Art Institute
of
Atlanta
! This was Banquet Number 17! Amazing staying power, folks!
Stan
welcomed the group of nearly forty, dressed in their colorful holiday
finery. We enjoyed Mimosas and beer, soft drinks and a good cup of coffee
while friends caught up with friends. The hors d'oerves were delicious,
crafted by Chef Jason Ward and his students. Our brunch banquet featured
shrimp and grits, made-to-order breakfast dishes, fresh salmon, roast beef,
and some side dishes worthy of second visits. The deserts were fabulous -
especially the peach cobbler with ice cream! The background music of the
season was a nice addition…
We
welcomed back a number of our most experienced Cadillac aficionados: the
Friedmans, Lindauers, Dorseys, Goehrings, Marty Comstock. We also greeted a
few of our newest members to their first Cadillac holiday banquet: the
Kippings, Wests, and Josie Starnes. Okay, Josie, I know it was your second.
Stan
briefly reviewed 2009, and highlighted the upcoming events of 2010. He
distributed a token of appreciation to the members of the board, a very
nice Lucite plaque recognizing the work that goes into the business of the
club. Martina Butler announced that we have been graced with a new
volunteer: Emerson Duke, who under considerable pressure from Martina, has
agreed to serve as newsletter editor! Emerson encouraged us to submit
stories via email! Martina can now go to the national board meetings
feeling confident that our region’s lack of a newsletter will never again
be a source of embarrassment. To celebrate, she and Sandy raffled off a
“Fifty-Fifty” ticket, earning member Paul Otto a nifty cash prize, and
netting the club an equally nifty addition to the coffers. Jay Friedman won
the group’s Peoples’ Choice Award for his ’49 Cadillac sedan, and
took home an impressive wall plaque. Member Terry Bird, who coordinated
last summer’s “Driving Miss Daisy Tour” and who will also coordinate
the Spring Driving Tour of
Huntsville
and northern
Alabama
, won the award for Member of the Year. Jimmy Dorsey, last year’s winner,
accepted the award on behalf of Terry, who could not be with us.
Frank
Butler, Stan Tucker and Emerson Duke served as auctioneers for the much
anticipated auction. It was an unqualified success, both for the club’s
bank balance, and for several lucky bidders. One observer was said to have
been delighted at winning enough Classic Cadillac literature to keep his
surgical rehab library chock full of Motordom’s Masterpiece. There were
fragile pieces of fine china (and not-so-fine china), books and brochures,
several bottles of wine, a pillow, and many, many more treasures from the
vaults of the membership. The rich diversity of gifts brought out some
chicanery among the bidders, and more than a couple of hearty competitions.
Well done, auctioneers!
With
a hearty toast and a well placed thank you, Stan bid us goodbye until the
next
Peach
State
event. If you were not able to attend this year’s banquet, and I know of
several who tried very hard but could not, please know that you were
MISSED! We hope to see you next year, for number 18! In the meantime,
members, keep checking our web site for upcoming events.

November

November
7,
2009:
North Georgia Cruise and
Drive-in Movie. Join us for a fun fall drive to the mountains ending
with a movie at the Swan Drive-In in Blue Ridge, GA.

For complete details: www.peachstateclc.com/drive-in.doc
For a planned make-up of an
October rainout, the group met Saturday the 7th of November at the Sonic
Drive-In on Highway 92 near
Trickum Road
in
Woodstock
. We had hot dogs and shakes, chicken sandwiches and fries – what else
would you do at a drive-in? Chuck, the owner-manager, said he was a
Cadillac guy himself. Chuck invited the club to make his two Sonics our
regular meeting place. He offered us ice for our tours and meetings (in
exchange for us using his place as a rallying point). Next time we give him
a try, we will get his membership application on the spot!
By 1:00 PM we were ready to
depart: Lee and Mary Jean Dunn (’57 sedan, Geraldine); Frank and Martina
Butler (’64 Eldo convertible, Big Blue); Sandy Partridge (’76 CDV,
Monica); Jack and Donna Hurley and son Eric (recent vintage Cadillac); Bob
and Judy Winchell (’76 Mirage); and Doug Bailey (’66 SDV). Lee led the
way up I-575 about an hour to the Panorama Farmer’s Market. It was a
popular place! In the lot were scores of motorcycles in groups of eight and
ten, and a LOT of families out exploring a beautiful Fall afternoon in the
mountains. We of course received a huge dose of much appreciated “Thumbs
Up!” And a few road hogs with little concern for the stopping distances
our big cars need… Inside the packed farmer’s market, we loaded
up with apples, apple butter, pies, and fudge. Back in the cars by 3:30,
Sandy
led us on to
Blue Ridge
, another hour out Rte 515. We lined ‘em up near
Main Street
, then fanned out to explore.
Main Street
is a narrow, quaint thoroughfare lined with coffee and gift shops. After an
hour or so sipping coffee and spelunking for a bargain, we gathered at the
Serenity Garden Café for – what else? – a serene meal. Lobster bisque,
crab cakes, pasta dishes, even fish ‘n chips. An enjoyable and peaceful
dinner among good friends…
About 6:00 PM we got back in
line and
Sandy
led us to the Swan Drive-in for a first-run release of Jim Carey’s “A
Christmas Carol.”
Sandy
had worked out a special spot for us with the management, so we were
“front and center” for the show. Little did we old timers know that
there’s a new practice at the old drive-in these days: You BACK YOUR SUV
into the space so the kids can bunk out AND watch the movie! I saw parents
facing the food court, backs to the movie, while their kids were camped out
in the back of the vehicle… We watched the movie the old-fashioned way,
nose first, in a lineup of Caddies that were undoubtedly the envy of all
the adults in the audience. The kids? They were probably scared to death by
the ghosts of Christmases past, present and future! It’s a good flick,
and one I want to see without headlights flashing on the screen.
Most or all of us left the
theater after the first movie, facing a two-hour drive home. The Winchell's
got out ahead of us and we never saw them again (although I know they made
it home safely). The Dunn's and Hurley's split off for Waleska. Frank and
Martina were left in our wake, as Sandy and I tooled merrily home averaging
about 65 mph on 515 and I-575. I was home by 10:30, and I assume the others
were close to that as well. The word I got was that all the cars performed
flawlessly.
I believe I am joined by ten
others who offer our hearty thanks to Sandy for arranging and leading our
marvelous Fall tour of the north Georgia mountains and movie theater…

For a detailed account
written by Doug Bailey with pictures click on the link below;
www.peachstateclc.com/DaltonCruise.doc
In June we cruised to Tucker, had lunch, and lined up on the street for
their big cruise-night. Great fun. So, we decided “let’s try it in
Dalton
!” We have at least ten members living north of
Woodstock
, and five of us closer to ATL. We figure
Dalton
is within reach for 15-20 members and their Cadillacs. Let’s show ‘em
what a lineup of Caddies looks like! The Cruise-In is in downtown
Dalton
,
North Hamilton Street
. It goes from 5:00 to dark. Saturday July 11th!
The PLAN: Meet at 1:45
PM for lunch at the Cracker Barrel off I-75 in Cartersville. Exit #290 in
Cartersville. Rally at the restaurant, eat, leave about 3:00 PM and caravan
up Highway 41 together. Arrive in
Dalton
by 4:00 PM.
Directions:
Head toward downtown
Dalton
(in Dalton Hwy 41 is called
Thornton Avenue
). Go east on
Morris Street
.
North Hamilton Street
. is two blocks east of Hwy 41. Parking begins there and goes north
on
Hamilton
for four or five blocks on both sides. They have had as many as 200
cars. When the front street is full, people park on the side streets as
well. We need to be there early! Eats and Drinks: The Dalton Depot is
right in the heart of town, within easy walking distance from anywhere at
the Cruise-In. There are also three or four other bars and grills. Bring
a cooler if you want. Questions?

April
4, 2009: After a week of rain and chill it was nice to
have a clear, bright sunny day to tour the Southeastern Railroad Museum in
Duluth. We meet for lunch at Pepperoni's Italian Restaurant and then headed
out for the museum. We had our picture taken on the Presidential Pullman
Coach that carried the body of President Warren G. Harding back to
Washington, DC after his mysterious death in a San Francisco hotel room
back on August 2, 1923. If you close you may see a faint shadowy figure in
the corner of the coach. There is a lot to see and do at the Museum, from
Engines, Coaches and Cabooses of different colors. The train ride was fun
and our very own Jay Friedman helped the engineer pilot the train we rode
on.

The
Peach State Cadillac & LaSalle Club’s
11th
Annual Invitational Spring Driving Tour
April
17th –19th 2009
www.peachstateclc.com/drivingtour.doc
I
would like to thank everyone that attended our driving tour, we had a great
group of 27 and a wonderful time. Jamie Willingham from the Lincoln Club
joined us and led our group through Callaway Gardens Friday.
On
Saturday we where treated by our own Hal Raper as F.D.R. who lead
us all around Warm Springs and the Little White house. Also thanks to Mike
who took over after I had to leave late Saturday. I’m looking forward to
our next event! Stan
Tucker, President
Nine cars and at one point 27 people had a high old time. We had
two'56s (Stan's Fleetwood and Mike Dougherty's rosy SDV), Lee and Mary Jean
Dunn's mint green '57 sedan, my turquoise extended deck '58, Bill Greene's
gray '60 flat top, Jimmy Dorsey's white '63 sedan, Martina's and Frank's
metallic blue '64 Eldo convertible, Sandy's electric blue '76 CDV and Bob's pale
yellow '76 Eldo convertible. We were stopped by so many people with thumbs
up and for photos I thought we had joined a parade. Warm Springs was celebrating
its spring festival, and everyone was warm and welcoming... With all that
color, we were like a huge Easter basket of colorful steel eggs...
Stan had to leave us for a wedding on Saturday
afternoon, and Mike Dougherty took over leadership of the group. Nicely
done, Mike! The wonderful job you did of leading us in Stan's absence will
surely net you MORE to do! Saturday evening we sat around the open decks of
the cars drinking beer and talking trash. We told some more lies and made
some more memories.
Sunday's highlights: We were all checked out by
10 AM. After breakfast Lee and Mary Jean Dunn, Cadillac Jack and Donna
Hurley went on home for another family affair. Bob and Judy Winchell headed
home, too. The remaining 14 of us went back to the Country Inn Restaurant
for brunch. After that, we drove to LaGrange for the tour of "Hills
and Dales," the estate of the Callaway family. Wow! We blew through
there in a flash and still it took two hours (not the anticipated 40
minutes). Several of us want to go back, and soon.
This made us over an hour late for the second
historic home on the agenda, and apparently the staff there left without
us. So, we never got to see that one. Bill and Mary and their carload and
Jimmy, Mary Sue and their friends from Bradenton went on home at that
point. We were in the midst of calling LaGrange member Jim Biagi to beg
for a rain check on visiting his home when he barreled into the parking
lot in his rose-colored '58 Series 62 sedan. We followed him to his
wonderful Fifties tribute of a home, thinking we would remain a polite, then leave to get on the road by 3:30 or 4:00.
Instead, enthralled, we stayed until 5:00 or 5:30 PM,
after having enjoyed Fifties treats such as Spam hors d'oeuvres, Moon Pies,
Twinkies, and Cokes in12-ounce bottles. We took pictures of the four cars
that remained by then, and checked out Jim's '58 (it actually belongs to
his daughter, Antoinette, who is the CLC member in the family).
Jim had a reporter from
a local newspaper there to take photos and get a story lined up for
Monday's LaGrange edition!

March 21, 2009:
The Truett Cathy Collection. Mr. Chick-Fil-A himself was there to host
and show us his vast collection, two warehouses full. He also treated us to
Lunch, Chick-Fil-A of course! We all meet at Melear’s BBQ about 1 mile South of the Courthouse Square in
Fayetteville starting at 9:00AM and were off for Truett's Collection at 10:30AM sharp.
The morning was clear, bright and brisk.
We had a very good turn out from our Club as well as the Studebaker,
Lincoln, Hudson and AACA Clubs all in attendance. There were around 250
people in total to see Truett's fine collection, it was a big crowd!
We would like to welcome our newest
members, Paul and Gloria West who purchased Truett's 1986 Cadillac Limo,
via silent auction, right
there from his collection. Congratulations and Welcome! We hope to see you
often.
If you were unable to attend see the
pictures below and remember our Club is on the move and we have a whole
years worth of fun and interesting events planned.

February
February 7, 2009: Our first Peach State sponsored event this year
was our 3rd Annual Dave Comstock Chili Cook-off. This years Cook-off was held at
Peach State Member Dick Peden's Estate in Alpharetta. The weather could not have
been better, clear blue sky's and 67 degrees. Dick was the Host of all Host's
and his cars weren't bad either! We had a great turnout with about 50 folks and
their cars. The Corvette Club joined us for this event and brought out some of
the Generals best plastic for use to enjoy as well as walking off with 2nd and
3rd place awards for their chili. But it was our own Activities Directors, the
Dougherty's who captured the Coveted Best Chili Award this year, once again
proving why Cadillac is "Standard to the World".
